The first bi-annual newsletter for the financial year 2017-18 (April to September 2017)
Since the issue of the last newsletter at the end of the financial year 2016-17 (March 2017), some important and interesting developments have taken place at Shoshit Samadhan Kendra, the fully free English medium residential school for the poorest of the poor, run by Shoshit Seva Sangh. The results of the CBSE examination were praiseworthy. Out of the 14 boys who appeared 2 scored a perfect 10 CGPA while 5 students got 9 and above CGPA. The average was 8.8 CGPA which would compare favorably with the better schools in India. The students of SSK are first generation learners coming from families which are among the poorest of the poor. The results are indeed heartening and buttresses the vision of Shishit Seva Sangh that given the opportunity the students of SSK can surely make a quantum jump in life and become catalysts of change in their community. As SSK got affiliation upto senior secondary (+2) level from CBSE in September, 2016, all students passing out from SSK shall appear in the exams conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) rather than National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
49 childrens of the musahar community drawn from the remote villages of Bihar were admitted to the pre-school class of SSK in April, 2017. The children are in the age-group of 6-8. All these children belong to families living much below the poverty line and from ghettoes of the villages. SSK now has students from all the district of Bihar.
The Foundation Day was observed as usual on 16th July. The students of the school put up a really impressive cultural performance. They enacted a scene from Shakespear’s Macbeth and short play on a theme from Ramayana. The primary school children did a song and dance performance which was indeed charming and impressive.
Two senior and highly qualified teachers were appointed as Heads of Department of Social Science and Natural Science. Shri Raman Kumar, HOD, natural Science is a post-graduated in Physics from IIT, Delhi. The HOD for Social Science has taught English for over two decades in a reputed DAV school of Patna. SSK continues to lay stress on sports. There is a two hours sports period at which training is given to the students by highly trained coaches in basket-ball, volley-ball, hockey, kho-kho/kabaddi, badminton, martial arts and yoga. The annual sports day was held on September 29, 2017.
